Our Requests of You


  • Online registration:  In order to attend the upcoming Fall Education Day at reduced member rates, please be sure to pay your yearly dues [CLICK HERE].  Online payment of dues will ensure that you will continue to receive information from us regarding upcoming events, and will also enable you to receive access to the member’s only section which includes job postings and a member directory.  For those of you who do not pay yearly dues (retired, emeritus), please complete the membership application/renewal for our records and so you may have access to member benefits if you have not done so already.
  • Deadline:  Your Fall Education Day registration must be completed by Friday, September 21st.  Registrations received after September 21st will incur a $15 late fee.  Please keep in mind that we are unable to give refunds after Monday, October 1st. You will be able to pay online securely via Paypal (credit card or your Paypal account).  We strongly encourage you to use this service to take care of your dues and pay for the conference. However, if your organization pays for your membership dues and/or conference fees by check or you wish to pay by check, please fill out the registration information online for our records and you will be able to print out the confirmation email/invoice and submit this form by mail accompanied by a check.  
  • Newsletter contents:  Please read the remainder of this newsletter, which will give you the details of the upcoming Fall Education Day, as well as the latest from our President, Barry Morris as the committee begins a new year of service with some new faces. Information about the conference is found by clicking on the newsletter sections above.

From the President’s Pen

Greetings all!  It is an exciting time to be a chaplain in healthcare as there are greater efforts to focus on quality, performance, and outcomes.  Chaplains have voice in each area as we provide quality care through our clinical competencies. It is also a great time to be active on the Executive Committee of the North Carolina Chaplains’ Association as we move into this exciting future and explore opportunities to give ourselves greater voice in our state healthcare arena.   I am also aware that there are prison, law enforcement, and workplace chaplains that are part of our membership.  My hope is to reach out to other chaplain groups to help offer fellowship, education, and advocacy.

As I begin my term as President, I am happy to be working with continuing executive committee member Jeanell Cox, Secretary and other committee chairs:  Suzanne Franklin, Publicity; Wanda Burton –Crutchfield, Institutional Consultant and advocacy; and our Past President Darryl Owens. I am also looking forward to serving with our new executive committee members: Beth Jackson-Jordan, Vice President and Pam Hudson, treasurer. Our other committee chairs are: Cyrus Bush, Membership, Darryl Jefferson, Education, and Sara Stratton, Webmaster. I’ve asked each one to write a little about themselves so you can better know each Executive Committee member.

Having been a member of the NCCA since 1995, I took some time to read a short history of our membership before that time.  What struck me most were the ups and downs the association has gone through as well as the relevance it has tried to maintain as it further developed its institutional identity.

Over my years of membership, I have noticed that each President has contributed to the Association based on their particular gifts and the state of the Association. Thinking back to Shay Greene’s (Crenshaw) presidency, when I was Education Chair, I recall how she helped bring financial stability to the organization. Elizabeth Hyland helped to market the association by designing a new logo and putting it on select items for purchase.  Jackie Allen followed Elizabeth, helping to make our conferences more affordable by choosing denominational retreat centers that offer a respite from the hustle and bustle of our daily routine.  Making our conferences affordable will attract greater attendance.   Darryl Owens brought us into the 21st century by getting our website more up to date, helping us to write clearer job descriptions, and continued in the vein of keeping education affordable.   I know each of them would say, “I didn’t do it on my own; but with the great help from the Executive Committee and others.”

As I think about what my vision is for the NCCA, I am challenged to grow our membership which has dipped recently.  In addition to growing our membership, I am interested in doing some strategic planning as an Association specifically looking at our mission of advocacy, education, and fellowship. We have a rich history filled with leaders who have kept the NCCA a healthy institution where chaplains across the state find fellowship and education and know that we advocate for ourselves in the marketplace.

I look forward to a fruitful two years and covet your prayers for our Executive Committee, our Association, and our members.




Getting to Know Your Board

At this June’s board meeting, the executive committee had its transition meeting where the outgoing board members meet with the incoming board members to ensure as smooth a transition as possible. The executive committee consists of the President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. The President also appoints other committee members who serve in the roles of Education, Membership, Publicity, Institutional Consultant, and Webmaster. The President from the past committee serves on the board in the Past President role. Members of the board were asked to contribute some biographical information about themselves and their role on the board. In this newsletter you will hear from Beth Jackson-Jordan – Vice President; Jeanell Cox – Secretary; Cyrus Bush – Membership; Pam Hudson – Treasurer; Darryl Jefferson – Education; Wanda Burton-Crutchfield – Institutional Consultant; Sara Stratton – Webmaster; and Suzanne Franklin – Publicity.


Beth Jackson-Jordan – Vice President – I am a Chaplain/CPE Supervisor and currently manage the Chaplain Residency program at Carolinas Medical Center NorthEast in Concord, NC. I am endorsed by the Alliance of Baptists and am working on a doctorate in Educational Leadership at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. My husband is a congregational minister and we enjoy traveling with our children (we just returned from Alaska) and gardening. I have a son who is an Americorps volunteer in Idaho, a daughter beginning her college career at UNC Chapel Hill this fall and a daughter still in high school.

In my role as Vice President of the NCCA, I will oversee the nomination and selection process for NC Chaplain of the Year. I look forward to serving on this wonderful leadership team and getting to know more of the members of this organization that has done so much to support the profession of chaplaincy in North Carolina.

Jeanell Cox – Secretary – I serve as the Secretary of the NCCA.  Myr primary job is to maintain meeting minutes and job descriptions for the organization.  I have also assisted with the project to improve NCCA’s web presence and support online membership/event registration.

I am primarily a stay-at-home parent at present, though I work very part-time for Albemarle Hospice in Elizabeth City as their Bereavement Support Chaplain and with Albemarle Hospital as their Supplemental Chaplain.  I am a Board Certified Chaplain with APC.  I am married to Rev. Christopher Ingram and we have three children: Nathaniel (age 4), Isaac (age 3) and Benjamin (9 months).

Cyrus Bush – Membership Chair – I have been a Chaplain for nine years and I currently serve as Chaplain for Thomasville Medical Center where I have been on staff for 5 years.

My role with NCCA is Membership Chair and as such I look forward to getting to know more of our fine NC Chaplains and being part of a team that discovers creative ways of increasing our membership as well as innovative ways for meeting some of the training and educational needs of our fellow Chaplains.

Pam Hudson – Treasurer – Hello All- My name is Pam Hudson and I am your Treasurer for our North Carolina Chaplains’ Association…..and let me start by saying that while my role may be one that is ‘all about the money’, I look forward to all the wonderful friendships to be shared among us.  I am a United Methodist minister in the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church and am in an extension ministry as a Senior Development Officer with The Foundation of FirstHealth located in Pinehurst, North Carolina.  Like each of you, my position carries many roles, but I primarily work on donor advocacy and patient visitation programs, third party fundraisers, program development, community liaison, and stewardship..…all in all ‘friend raising’.  I have previously been secretary for the NCCA and am happy to be serving again!  My background includes having been a Clinical Chaplain at Samarkand Manor Training School and Spiritual Care Coordinator and Chaplain with FirstHealth Hospice & Palliative Care.  I was also a CPE Resident at UNC Hospitals in the PICU, Pediatric floors, Emergency Department and one unit of the Psychiatric ward back in 1988-89.

Darryl Jefferson- Education Chair – My name is Darryl Jefferson and I’m the new NCCA Education Chair. Presently I’m one of the chaplains with Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region in Charlotte, North Carolina. I’m assigned to the Levine and Dickson Hospice House which is a 16-bed inpatient facility that focuses on symptom management.

I completed my M. Div. at Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond, Virginia in 2001. I “thankfully” completed my CPE at the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System MCV campus in 2005. My first chaplain position was with Presbyterian Hospice and Palliative Care, which is connected with Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. After two years, I transferred into the Presbyterian Cancer Center where I continued to work with hospice patients, as well as oncology, dialysis, and critical care patients.

Originally, I’m from a small town near Houston called Angleton, Texas. I received my BA in Journalism with a concentration in Broadcasting from Southwest Texas University in San Marcos, Texas. I had dreams of becoming the next Walter Cronkite or Casey Kasem, but my path made a slight detour. I still hope to one day reclaim my broadcasting roots.

For fun, I’m taking guitar lessons, and learning audio/video editing on my iMac. For the past three years, I have been a part of Charlotte Latin Dance as a salsa dancer. I assist with giving salsa lessons and participate on our performance teams. I hope to meet you soon.

Wanda Burton-Crutchfield – Institutional Consultant – Advocacy is one of the pillars of the mission of the North Carolina Chaplains Association.  As Institutional Chaplain, I approach advocacy from differing places.  The NCCA, through my work and the work of the members, advocates publicly when we learn that a chaplain position has been cut or is in the plans to be cut.  Privately, we care for a peer who is hurting.  We advocate for a position over a particular person in a position.  It is an important boundary that helps us focus on the fact that our work is about spreading the news that caring chaplains impact the quality of life and culture of caring in any institution in which we serve.

Advocacy is also about making professional connections.  As the Institutional Consultant, I work to build relationships and bridges with administrators, institutions, and associations that already hire and use chaplains as well as those considering such a move. This year marks my third year as the NCCA Institutional Consultant.  I have been a member of the NCCA since my residency days in 2003.

Sara Stratton – Webmaster – Hello friends, my name is Sara Stratton and I serve as our new Webmaster. I am building on the strong foundation established by former Webmaster Peter Maffly-Kipp, and the beautiful redesign by Web Developer Katherine Kent. My intention is to provide a website that is easy to navigate, relevant and useful to members and others. I am especially excited about the option to both register and pay for conferences online. Your feedback is both welcome and appreciated as we grow!

Professionally, I am a Staff Chaplain at Carolinas Medical Centers-Pineville, a rapidly growing community hospital in southern Mecklenburg County. I have been with Carolinas Healthcare System for almost seven years, and served at our Level 1 Trauma Center downtown for the first four years of my tenure. In 2005, I completed two years of CPE residency at Wake Forest University’s Baptist Medical Center, and explored the use of imagery in the pastoral conversation for my second year project. I received my MDiv from Earlham School of Religion in Indiana, and am a recorded minister in the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). Outside of work, I have a wonderful partner, beautiful baby, and forgiving dog who round out my life and remind me to live in the present. Recreational activities I enjoy are hiking, biking and pottery.

Suzanne Franklin – Publicity Chair – I am the committee member who communicates to the membership through the creation of the newsletter (Fall and Spring editions). My main responsibilities center on providing information on upcoming conferences through the newsletter, which includes information about the conference sites, speakers, topics, schedule, fees and activities of the NCCA during these events and throughout the year. I am also the person who sends  postcards and emails to remind you of upcoming events and yearly membership dues.

I have also been involved in the redesign of the website and assisting members who register on line. I also assist the membership chair and treasurer with registration and membership concerns. I have been a member of the NCCA since 2003 during my residency years. This is my fifth year serving as Publicity Chair for the organization.

I joined the NCCA while I was an intern at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, where I went on to complete two years of Residency. I then became Director of Pastoral Care for Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro, NC for five and a half years. Currently, I am a Supervisory Candidate and chaplain for Duke University Medical Center where I will begin my first unit of “solo” supervision of an intern CPE group this fall.

Fall Education Day Seminar ~ 4.5 CEU Credits

Personality in Practice: Experiencing the Enneagram as a Chaplain Power Tool

On October 4, 2012, the North Carolina Chaplains Association is returning to the Caraway Conference Center to offer its annual Fall Education Day. This year’s gathering is designed to be interactive and dynamic. Wanda Burton-Crutchfield, the NCCA Institutional Consultant, will guide the group in a day’s work with the Enneagram, a personality test created and refined by Don Riso and Russ Hudson. The title for the day is Personality in Practice: Experiencing the Enneagram as a Chaplain Power Tool. Participants will be offered an overview of the Enneagram and the Nine Personality Types that make up this tool. Then the group will engage case studies that invite them to use the Enneagram as an effective tool in the practice of chaplaincy.

In her work as a Corporate Chaplain, Wanda’s primary work is with employees. She is a chaplain to hospice chaplains, helping them process life, work, and end-of-life care. She also works as a life coach of sorts with administrators in Healthcare centers, Hospice offices, Home care offices, Rehab departments, and Pharmacy services. Wanda’s work also invites her to engage the corporate structure and the individuals and groups that are its human engine. The Enneagram has been instrumental in this work. Understanding personality types equips Chaplain Burton-Crutchfield in her work with individuals, with families, and with the teams she encounters every day. We will be invited to do similar work as we experience a personality laboratory at the Fall Education Day.  All attendees will receive 4.5 CEU Credits.

Some homework on the part of participants will deepen the experience. Chaplains planning to attend are encouraged to find out their own Enneagram type. Wanda recommends the following website,www.enneagraminstitute.com, where both free and low-cost ($10) testing is offered.  Enneagram testing apps are also available for most smartphones.
